Governor Charlie Baker is hoping sportsbooks will open before football season.

DraftKings is hoping to be the sportsbook provider for Massachusetts.

The Governor has submitted is own sports betting bill, MA HB 68.

BOSTON – Governor Charlie Baker said on Tuesday that he is hoping that sports betting will be legalized before Congress breaks for the summer.

During the opening of DraftKings new office in Boston, Baker said to the press that he is interested in having sportsbooks open before the upcoming NFL season. Baker also said that sports betting is good for Massachusetts because it will bring additional revenue for the state.

The Governor Is All In

One of the things that shows how much the governor wants sports betting is that he filled his own sports betting bill. MA SB 68 was filed by Baker to legalize sports betting in the state. Several other lawmakers have filed their own sports betting bills as well, so the interest between them is shared.

All of the bills that have been currently filed have not gone further than the introductory stages just yet. Lawmakers have a lot of work to do before any of the bills can come close to becoming a law.

DraftKings Wants In

After touring the new DraftKings office, Baker says he is more dedicated than ever to bring sports betting to the state. DraftKings is also highly interested in sports betting in Massachusetts since their home office is in Boston.

DraftKings has been providing sportsbooks to New Jersey ever since sports betting became legalized in the state. They offer a brick-and-motor sportsbook and a mobile option is available as well. DraftKings is hoping that they will be able to provide a sportsbook to Massachusetts if sports betting were to become legal there.

One of the reasons that DraftKings wants to provide sportsbooks to Massachusetts is because people are already making their sports bets. They are using online offshore sportsbooks to make these bets and Jason Robins, DraftKings CEO, said legalizing sports betting would regulate the practice and bring in a lot of money to the state.

“People still do it. There's a $150 billion annual betting market that exists on the black market in the U.S,” said Robins.” “That just shows people want it, so why not create a safe, legal environment, bring in tax dollars for the state, and create great jobs and opportunities for employers like us?"

Even if sports betting in Massachusetts was legalized tomorrow, there would still be plenty of work needed to be done. State regulators would still need time to write and publish the rules to show how sports betting would work. That is why Governor Charlie Baker wants sports betting sooner rather than later. He wants to make sure that sportsbooks are opened before the NFL season begins.

BOSTON, Mass. –The Massachusetts State Lottery is doing good business this month, but for how long? In the wake of sports betting and technology around the country, the world is moving forward into the digital age. The State Lottery In Massachusetts however, has yet to include an online addition to their Lottery games.

The Push For The Digital Age

The world’s population continues to evolve with new technology throughout, and the need for businesses to adapt to the digital age is paramount for their success and survival. State Treasurer Deb Goldberg understands this plight for the Massachusetts State Lottery. If the Lottery does not adapt, then it may well die off like a wounded calf in the wild.

“We can well manage the decline of the Massachusetts State Lottery,” said Goldberg during a Lottery Commission Meeting. “It won’t happen overnight, but it will ultimately happen in the same way that I think Sear and Toys R Us are.”

Some Opposed To The Idea

Some residents do not favor the idea, however. Convenience store owner Jamie Salamone is one of them. Salamone owns two stores in the area and earns a five percent commission on lottery sales. Salamone says the Lottery games bring in roughly 35 to 40 percent of his store’s income and losing the in-person ticket buys could be harmful.

“Overall, we’d have a loss of commission, loss of related sales, and with all of that, business would decline,” said Salamone.

The Online Lottery Bill

SportsBettinginMassachusetts.com knows for the Massachusetts State Lottery to stay afloat, change is needed. Bill H 37 will, if passed, establish an online lottery. The bill was proposed by State Treasurer Deb Goldberg. The proposal for establishing an online lottery has been referred to the Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure. The Committee is chaired by Senator Paul Feeney.

“As a former local official, I want to say how important I think this form of unrestricted local aid is to cities and towns,” said Feeney to the Boston Herald. “We cannot allow the lottery to be in hospice – It’s vital.”

The Future Of Online Sports Betting In Massachusetts

Bill H 37, once the Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure discusses it, will have the power to greatly impact the state for the better. Convenience stores may lose some of their commission-based money from an online addition to the lottery, but it seems as though it’s a worthy price to pay considering the alternative.

Refusal to adapt to the digital age would surely mean a steep decline of business for convenience stores in Massachusetts, something that may be too steep to recover from.

Boston, MA - After much debate and thought on the issue of online gambling, Massachusetts legislators have decided that inaction is the best course of action at this time. With opposition on both sides of the issue, legislators decided to table the issue for another year. This is unfortunate, as MA was thought to be a leading contender for online gambling legalization at the beginning of 2017.

“Online lottery and online gaming are both issues that are being reviewed now to try to figure out how we manage the situation so we don’t hurt the lottery,” Stan Rosenberg, Senate President, said in an interview with a local Boston radio station. “And in the case of online gaming, that we don’t hurt the casino industry we’re building in Massachusetts.”

This reasoning can be drawn directly back to complaints made by casino owners at the beginning of the year. After multiple reports came out stating that Massachusetts legislators were seriously considering the regulation of online gambling in the state, several opponents became extremely vocal, namely, the three casino owners who fought for years to have land-based gambling legalized in the state.

These three casino owners in Massachusetts shelled out quite a bit of cash to open facilities in the state, and they felt that their loyalty was being directly targeted by this proposal. When online gambling was opened on the floor of State Congress, they weren’t hesitant in making their concerns known.

Most vocal amongst the casino owners is Eric Schippers, a senior Vice President with Penn National. He stated in an interview that if online gambling were to come to Massachusetts, he (and the other casino owners in the state) should have the exclusive rights to offering online gaming to MA residents. See, his biggest issue was the already well-established online, offshore casino business.

Penn National, along with another casino in the state, have already spent nearly $200 million on licensing fees and construction costs alone. The owners believe that it is unfair that someone who is running a website with virtually no overhead cost (at least comparable to what they’re spending for land-based physical locations) should be allowed to just waltz right in after they have invested so much into the industry and trusted the state with that investment.

Stephen Crosby, the Chairman of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, feels differently. “There’s billions of dollars being gambled online now. The question is whether we in Massachusetts want to take it out of the shadows…and take a piece of the action.” Many in the legislation felt that it was their right and duty to pursue as many avenues for new revenue as possible.

None more so, it seems, than State Treasurer Deb Goldberg. She not only pushed legislation in 2016 but has been one of the most active proponents of legalizing online gambling and lottery sales in 2017, as well. “We must join the 21st century if this business is going to continue to thrive,” She said. “The internet has proved to be a lucrative and beneficial business platform.”

When it became known to her that the Senate would not be taking any action on proposed legislation this session, She made her disappointment clear. “My feeling is we have an opportunity…I just hope that opportunity doesn’t get blocked.”

Boston, MA - While sports betting in Massachusetts might not be getting a boot into the digital age anytime soon, that's not the case for online gambling in general. State officials have been pondering the issue for some time now, focusing heavily on the economic ramifications such a move would have on Massachusetts. If MA were to make moves to legalize online gambling, they would be only the fourth state to do so. As more states move to legalize different forms of gambling the pressure mounts on PASPA and the legality it has. Our only hope is that as we move closer to legal casino gambling it will slowly fold legal sports betting in with it.

Online gambling has been going on through the black market for years all across the US. Massachusetts only just joined the world of land-based casino gambling a few years ago, after passing legislation that allowed for three cities to open casinos. Only one of those is up and running, the other two still under construction and set to open in the coming years. So even with land-based options in the state, many residents prefer the ease and convenience of online gambling sites.

Jennifer Flanagan, a state Senator and member of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, feels that a move towards legalizing online gambling would make MA a hub for new technological advances. “The online gaming world is evolving every day,” says Flanagan. “I think there’s a lot of merit to the idea of encouraging developers to come to Massachusetts to create the next big thing.”

Flanagan has support behind her claims that regulating online gambling in Massachusetts would bring in an extra source of income for the state. A new source of entertainment creates a new job market. This vein of thinking is what is leading other states like Pennsylvania and New York to pen their own pro-online gambling legislation.

Does Everyone Want Online Gambling In MA?

There are those who are opposed to the change in law, mainly the three casino owners who have invested billions into their companies. Two casinos spent $195 million in licensing, and are not thrilled with the idea that their biggest competition is going to be an easily accessed, online, offshore company.

Eric Schippers, a senior VP with Penn National, wants the exclusive rights to online casino gambling if MA decides to go in that direction. Schippers believes that it would be in bad faith for the state to allow out of state (or even out of country) competition to walk in and steal their potential profits after shelling out hundreds of millions for the licensing and then building of the casino.

Some state legislators agree with this, stating that it would be better to reward those businesses that have already invested billions of dollars locally, rather than turn their backs on them. Others, though, are open to the possibility of legalizing all forms of online gambling rather than just handing exclusive rights over to the three casinos in the state.

All of this is just speculation, of course. There are no legislative bills in the works to bring this about during MA’s session, and as far as we know, it will never take off past this conversation. But the argument for legalizing online gambling seems to be the same for regulating sports betting. As the Chairman of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, Stephen Crosby, put it, “There’s billions of dollars being gambled online now. The question is whether we in Massachusetts want to take it out of the shadows, regulate it, and take a piece of the action.”

The first round of NBA playoffs is set and ready to go as we kick off the 2017 postseason. Alongside a number of interesting matchups, we also get our first look at the NBA Finals betting odds. Each series is best-of-seven, and while some will most certainly be won in four or five games total, others will take it down to the last second in their battle to stay alive. Below, we’ll take a look at each of the eight series in round one of the NBA playoffs, noting strengths and weaknesses for both and giving our prediction for how long each series will last. We also include NBA Finals betting odds for each team for residents wanting to bet on sports in Massachusetts. These are the odds to win the Finals before anything is played, and as the postseason plays out, expect these to change. Historically, a 1 or 2 seed will take home the Title – as teams ranked that high have won it all 16 of the last 20 years. But change always happens, and teams that were longshots might prove that they have what it takes to win everything, while early favorites might fall to a more determined team. Just ask the 1995 Houston Rockets, the 6-seed that defied everything to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy that year.

Eastern Conference Matchups:

Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls

The Boston Celtics cruised into first place in the East, beating out the Cavs for the number one spot in the East as they spiraled at the end of the season. As a reward, the team from Boston will face the eight-seed Chicago Bulls. While Boston’s road to the postseason was relatively easy, Chicago struggled until the very end to find their way into the eighth seed.

Chicago has the upper hand when it comes to playoff experience, and Jimmy Butler will give the team a run for their money. Ultimately, though, the Celtics should be able to defeat the Bulls in six games. Chicago’s defense will more than likely hone in on Isaiah Thomas, giving Al Horford the opportunity to step up and make plays. Jae Crowder will cover Butler, and while this series won’t be an easy sweep, the depth of Boston’s bench and more talented coaching will be too much to handle for the struggling Chicago team.

Boston +1600, Chicago +25000

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers have been fighting for their lives, so to speak, over the last few weeks, battling to make sure they earned a spot in the top eight. They won the last five games of the regular season and earned the 7-seed, but must now face arguably the best team in the Eastern conference to keep their postseason play alive.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were the exact opposite of the Pacers at the end of the regular season, acting lackadaisical on defense and sleepwalking their way through their last few games. Everyone knows that LeBron and Kyrie bring it in the postseason, so no one expects this lazy style of play to continue in the postseason. But it wouldn’t be surprising if it takes the Cavs six games to defeat Indiana. This series should serve as the wake-up call Cleveland needs, especially if they want to get themselves back to the Finals.

Cleveland +333, Indiana +25000

Toronto Raptors vs. Milwaukee Bucks

The Raptors finished the season with 51 wins even after losing Kyle Lowry for most of the season and having DeMar DeRozan suffer from injuries throughout. Easily their two most important players, the Raptors were still able to have an extremely successful season, with Serge Ibaka and PJ Tucker finding their stride with the team and putting up great years. DeRozan is back to full health and Kyle Lowry will be back in time to help the Raptors in their postseason push.

Even all of that doesn’t mean that the Raptors are going to have an easy time beating the 6-seed Bucks. This team had new life breathed into it by the return of Khris Middleton and the addition of Malcolm Brogdon. The Bucks also have the best player in the series in Giannis Antetokounmpo, who averages 22.9 PPG and nearly 9 rebounds/game. Both teams are going to battle back and forth through this series but look to Toronto to pull out the victory in the end. This series goes to a full seven games though, almost no doubt.

Toronto +1600, Milwaukee +25000

Washington Wizards vs. Atlanta Hawks

The Wizards may be the number four seed, but they could have easily been higher than that if not for superstar John Wall struggling to recuperate from an injury. Bradley Beal found his stride and is now a shining new talent for Washington, shooting just over 40% from the 3-point line. This Wizards team is balanced on both sides of the ball and should be able to handily defeat a Hawks team that struggled to finish the year out.

The Hawks have Dwight Howard and Paul Millsap to bolster their playoff hopes, and Dennis Schroder can easily blow your mind with his gameplay – sometimes in a good way but unfortunately just as frequently in a bad way. With inconsistent play inside of a flailing organization, the Wizards shouldn’t have too much trouble wrapping up this series in five games. They may even sweep.

Western Conference Beting Odds:

Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trailblazers

“Blazers’ in six!” Damien Lillard said with a smirk to a local TV reporter after being asked whether they’d win in six or seven. While Damian Lillard’s clickbait answer falls right in line with his viral video-esque style of play, the Trailblazers are the heavy underdogs heading into this matchup and he and everyone else knows it. This is a true number 1 vs number 8 series, and unfortunately for Portland fans, it won’t be a close one.

Golden State has dominated the NBA season, losing only 15 games – and that’s without their best player. Kevin Durant missed a majority of the season with a knee injury but has recouped enough to join his team in their postseason push. As the heavy favorites to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy at the end of the Finals, the Warriors should have no trouble against the eight-seed Trailblazers. Let’s give Portland at least one W, as the Warriors wrap it up in five.

Golden State -160, Portland +30000

San Antonio Spurs vs. Memphis Grizzlies

A San Antonio-Memphis matchup is nothing new to fans of either team. This will be the fourth time the team has met in the postseason in the last seven years. That being said, don’t expect the same level of play as years past. Memphis just barely slipped over the finish line after losing 13 of their last 20 games in the regular season. Losing Chandler Parsons for most of the season to injury didn’t help.

The Spurs may not have finished the season in first place but they still finished the season strong. Perhaps more importantly, they finished the season well-rested. Betting on this matchups’ point totals will more than likely trend under, as the Spurs have the highest rated defense in the league and the Grizzlies allow the fewest points in the paint of any team in the league. The Spurs should handily defeat the Grizzlies with their superior offensive skills, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they sweep Memphis 4-0.

San Antonio +600, Memphis +15000

Houston Rockets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

The matchup we’re all the most excited about – Russell Westbrook vs. James Harden in the fight for history. Oh, sorry, technically it’s the Oklahoma City Thunder vs the Houston Rockets to move forward to the next round of the playoffs. But really, everyone knows that this matchup is all about seeing two superstars battle it out for total domination and the honor of being named League MVP. Both players are the only two in actual contention for the title this year, and with the NBA switching things up and presenting the award after the playoffs instead of before, we get to see both players go all out to prove that they are the most valuable player.

Aside from watching these two face off, this should be an incredibly close series, giving fans andbettors a can’t-miss round one playoff series. In four meetings, the Rockets took home three wins over OK City, but each match was incredibly close. Houston ranks worst in the league for points allowed in the paint, while the Thunder are second in the NBA with points scored in the paint. As the higher seed, Houston is the home team and will use this to their advantage, but don’t expect this series to close out anytime soon. It will easily go to six games and more than likely will take all seven to close out the series. Houston will more than likely snuff out the Thunder and advance to the second round.

Houston +1600, Oklahoma City +6600

LA Clippers vs. Utah Jazz

The Clippers have disappointed year after year in the postseason. But 2017 might just be the year they break this trend and actually perform at the level they should, rather than throwing everything away on bad performances and stupid play calling. The Clippers have the upper hand in this series, earning the home court advantage. They also won three of the four regular-season meetings against the Jazz, all of which were by double points. The Clippers finished the regular season strong, winning their last seven games of the season.

The Jazz are organized, determined, and have all-star talent on their roster. But it still might not be enough to take home this series. Gordon Hayward will have to prove he’s worth the huge chunk of change the Jazz are shelling out for him this summer, and this series is the place to prove it. If he can continue his all-star ways, the Jazz might just be able to squeeze by this Clippers team. But if he repeats his 2012 playoff performance where he averaged 7.3 points through four games, Utah is in for a tough ride. Keep your eye on Rudy Gobert and DeAndre Jordan, as well. These players will provide quite a show as they go at it in the paint. The Jazz are more determined but the Clippers are more experienced, and that, plus home court advantage, wins the day for LA. The Clippers take it in seven.
